Working Abroad

Working Abroad - How to do it!

It can be difficult finding work abroad. Typically, you contact an overseas employer and they say "Do you have a work permit". The problem is that in most Countries it is the employer who applies for a work permit not you!

Immigration based on Skills, Qualifications and Work Experience

You can gain entry to a number of Western Countries based simply on your skills, qualifications and work experience. Once you have been granted immigration to a particular Country you are then free to live in that Country permanently, and work for any employer. Some of the programmes that are available are as follows:

Work Rights based on Nationality

The following groups of people can work in certain other Countries more easily:

This is not an exhaustive list but covers some of the more common examples where you can work in another Country.

Visa Categories that may allow you to work

You may also have the right to work in another Country if you are in a particular visa category:

Again, this is not an exhaustive list and simply covers some common examples.

How to improve your chances of being able to work abroad

Lets assume that you are not in the fortunate position of coming under one the above categories. What do you do? The following points should be considered:

Is there a shortage of your skills in your destination Country?

It is unlikely that an employer will be interested in applying for a work permit/visa unless there is a serious shortage of your skills in the destination Country.

Will your employer transfer you to an overseas office?

If you have a helpful employer this is a good way of gaining entry to another Country. It is normaly the case that a particular Country will make it easier to gain a work permit/visa if you wish to transfer an existing staff member to that Country.

Are you willing to become a student again?

There are some Countries such as Australia and Canada that make it easier to gain immigration if you have been a student there. If you have a qualification from your destination Country it will also make you more attractive to prospective employers.

Do you need to upgrade your skills, qualifications and work experience?

You may find that to gain immigration to a particular Country you need to fulfill certain criteria. For example, for entry to Australia it normally helps to have four years of high level work experience.

How much research have you done?

This is really important. Do you know what sort of demand there is for your services in your destination Country? Have you visited your destination Country?

We at workpermit.com wish you the best of luck with your job hunting, and hope that this short report has been of help to you.
